This type of skin cancer originates from the lower portion of the epidermis (basal layer). It most commonly arises in areas of heavy sun exposure, including the nose, ears, lips, eyelids, forehead and face, and the V of the neck. Although the metastatic potential is low, this cancer can invade very deeply, down to the bone. Frequently, several MOHS stages are needed in order to clear the tumor.
